The month before we moved from California was filled with the promise of my doula career. I had two clients due in April; the doula trainer was sending more births my way, and I was starting to think website (this is/was under construction, but I'd love to share it none the less!) and business cards. I had set a goal that I would become a certified DONA doula one year from the time I officially became a member of DONA; and it looked like I was on my way towards fulfilling that ambition.

Well, life throws you curves. To my absolute joy, the week we moved out here to Omaha I found out I was pregnant. I am so happy to have a bun in the oven...but it pretty much guarantees that I'll have to put my doula career goals on hold for the moment. There is nothing more important to me right now than growing my own little family. I know mothering two little babes is going to take all (or at least most of my energy.)

After attending my first birth as a doula I quickly became aware how physically strenuous supporting a laboring mom is. I don't think it is something I could handle pregnant. Between the exhaustion I feel in the first trimester, and the physically limiting belly of the second and third trimesters I think it's fair to say I wouldn't be a very good doula for long and arduous labors!

Plus, I plan on nursing my new baby for at least a year. An other lesson I walked away from my first birth, is that it isn't practical to be a nursing mom and a doula simultaneously. At least, not for me. I left my first birth after a 14 hours (not even that long!) with horribly engorged and painful breasts; and my son and I were only nursing a few times a day at that point!

Let me repeat and repeat: I am no way saddened, disappointed, or resentful of my current pregnancy. There is nothing I'd rather be doing than growing this little babe!

But, I unpacked my doula bag today. Actually my husband unpacked it for me several days ago because he wanted to reclaim the rolling suitcase that I had taken over as my birth-bag. He left my doula-goodies neatly on a blanket for me to go through. Looking through the items I was struck by a wave of wistfulness as I reflected how much energy, love, and excitement I put in to assembling my kit.

There were hot packs, oils, batteries powered candles, fans, hair ties, and lip glosses. There was my deflated birth ball, strap, and pump. I had packed new clean socks for mom, A change of clothes for me as well as my toiletry bag. A rolling pin, massage tool, and of course straws. There were mints, and gum, and lotion. Each little item was a part of my dream...to be one hell of a doula.

As I placed all the items into a box and closed the lid I was about to let myself feel pretty blue that none these things was going to get any use for a long long time. But, slowly a nice warm feeling came over and I had to smile realizing that: No actually, it would all get used in about six months...for my own birth. :-) And that is wonderful.
